Invest In High Quality Products
One of the most important hair care tips is to invest in high quality products. Just like you wouldn’t use damaging products on your skin, you should avoid using them on your hair too.
Many low-quality hair care products contain damaging ingredients like sulfates, parabens, silicones, and even formaldehyde. These ingredients can cause a variety of problems ranging from hair damage to potential negative impacts on your overall health. And don’t worry, high quality products don’t have to be expensive! Now more than ever, so many affordable hair care brands are coming out with products that don’t use damaging ingredients.
Some of my favorite high quality and affordable hair care products include: L’Oreal EverPure Moisture Shampoo, Shea Moisture Hydrate + Repair Shampoo, and Eva NYC Mane Magic 10-In-1 Primer.
Don’t Over Wash Your Hair
Did you know that you’re not supposed to wash your hair every single day? Washing your hair every single day, when you don’t need to, can actually damage your hair.
Your body naturally produces oils that keep your hair healthy and moisturized. When you wash your hair too frequently, you actually strip your hair of those natural oils. What you’re stuck with is hair that becomes dry, brittle, or damaged. You may even deal with hair that’s too oily, since overwashing can cause your scalp to become dry, thus causing your skin to overproduce oil.
One of the absolute best hair care tips for healthy hair is to wash your hair less frequently. Depending on your hair type, and health, you can choose to wash your hair every other day, three times a week, or even once a week! Play around with different hair washing schedules until out find the one that works for you.
If you’re someone who has always washed their hair every single day, you may notice that your hair gets too oily to wash every other day. Although that’s sometimes the case, more often than not your body just has to get used to your new hair washing schedule. Start small, like washing your hair every other day, and see how you do. And remember, it can take up to a month for your body to adjust and stop producing too much oil. But the benefits of not washing your hair every day are totally worth it!
Avoid Over-Using Protein Treatments
Using a protein treatment can be extremely beneficial, especially if you have damaged hair. (One of my all time favorite products ever, the ApHogee Two Step Treatment is a protein treatment, and I can’t live without it!). But, protein should not be used in your hair every day.
Protein treatments were actually designed to be used temporarily to help strengthen hair, and too much can cause more damage. When your hair develops too much protein buildup, hair can snap, appear dull, or feel more straw-like and stiff.
Hair care products that include protein should be used as a short-term treatment only. If you’re dealing with severely damaged hair, a protein treatment once a week can help improve the overall health of your hair. Once you see improvements, you should then use a protein treatment once a month or once every couple of months to repair mild to moderate damage, and to keep hair healthy and strong.
Limit Damaging
Although strong, hair can only take so much damage before it starts to show. And once you can see signs of damage, you need to act fast to prevent even more from happening. That’s why it’s so important to limit things that cause damaged hair when possible.
Avoid over-using hot tools on your hair, and if you need to use them, make sure you’re using a sulfate-free heat protectant serum. Dying your hair or getting a perm can also cause damage to your hair, and should always be done the right way and never overdone.
You can still do these things to your hair, but you need to be careful about it.

Dying Your Hair
If you’re choosing to dye your hair at home, pay attention to these super important hair care tips!
Although box dyes are available everywhere, and it seems almost everyone has dyed their own hair at least once, you can actually cause a lot of damage to your hair if you aren’t careful.
When you dye your own hair make sure you’re reading all instructions provided. Talk to a hair care professional if you have any questions or look up reputable tutorials and advice online. Know your hair type and color, and know realistically what kind of color you can get in a single process.
If you have dark hair and want to go platinum, understand that you will probably have to dye your hair a few times before you reach your desired color. If you try to lift from dark brown to nearly white in one go, you’ll most likely end up with totally fried hair.
If you are choosing to dye your hair at home, do a treatment before and after dying your hair to limit damage. Olaplex No. 3, as well as the Shampoo and Conditioner are great for keeping hair healthy after a dye job.

Use Dry Shampoo
Keeping dry shampoo on hand is another one of my favorite hair care tips!
Since you shouldn’t be washing your hair every single day, dry shampoo can be a great alternative to help keep your hair oil-free. It’s also a total life saver when you forget to wash your hair and you need it to look and smell fresh again! Dry shampoo can be used to add volume and lift to hair as well. It’s a versatile hair care product everyone should be using!
Just make sure you’re not using dry shampoo every single day. And make sure that the dry shampoo you’re using is free of damaging ingredients!
Some of my all time favorite dry shampoos are: Amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo, R+Co Death Valley Dry Shampoo, and Oribe Gold Lust Dry Shampoo.
Treat Damaged Hair Right Away
Whether you’re using heat styling tools, dying your hair, or wearing a way too tight ponytail everyday, damaged hair happens to everyone. But if you treat it quickly, you can avoid even more damage.
There are specific signs of damaged hair you should look out for like split ends, hair that’s hard to brush, or breakage. Once you start to see these signs, start treating your hair!
A few standout products that help treat damaged hair include Olaplex No. 3, Briogeo Don’t Despair, Repair Deep Conditioning Mask, and It’s A 10 Miracle Leave In Product.

Rinse Your Products Out
Are you sure you’re really rinsing your shampoo and conditioner out when you wash your hair? Believe it or not, hair product buildup is a really common thing.
If you’re not thoroughly washing your hair care products out, you could end up with product buildup. The shampoo and conditioner you use could potentially leave residue on your hair strands. This residue can actually make it harder for your hair to retain moisture, leaving hair looking dry or damaged.
But easy enough fix! Just make sure you’re completely rinsing those products out when you’re in the shower. You can also invest in a detox shampoo like this one, to really remove excess buildup.
Use Products For Your Hair Type + Needs
Nearly every hair care product out there caters to a specific hair type, color, or need. And one of the best hair care tips is to use the products that will benefit your hair the most.
If you dye your hair blonde, make sure you’re using a toning purple shampoo, like this one. Also check out The Best Products For Blonde Hair, for more blonde hair care must-haves.
If you have color-treated hair only use shampoos and conditioners designed for color treated hair. These kinds of products keep color vibrant and hair healthy. Redken Color Extend Shampoo is a great product to keep colored hair from fading.
Those with curly hair should use hair care and styling products designed for curls. These products help fight frizz and keep curls looking and feeling healthy and moisturized. The Briogeo Curl Charisma Leave In Defining Cream and Davines Love Curl Shampoo are two amazing products for curly hair.
Whatever your hair type, there’s a product out there for you! Next time you go to buy a new shampoo or treatment, think about your hair care needs and find products that work for them.
Listen To Your Hairdresser
One of the most important hair care tips, and one that I cannot stress enough! If you have a hairdresser, or you go to a salon, listen to what they tell you! Follow the steps, recommendations, and advice they give you.
Hair stylists spend so much time getting the right credentials and skills needed to do virtually anything with anyone’s hair! They know what they’re doing and what they’re talking about.
They’re not saying they can’t bring your hair to a level 11 blonde because they don’t want to or because they want to charge you more money. They’re saying it because if they do, your hair will be fried. The products they recommend are products they know will work for your hair!
Hairdressers are professionals, don’t brush their advice off.
